Announcing new on-line resources from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
February 12, 1998The Perseus Project and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston are pleased to announce the first illustrated Web catalog of ancient art from the MFA. Over 235 Greek vases from the MFA's celebrated collection are now illustrated, with 670 pictures, in the Perseus vase catalog. In addition, the landmark catalog of Greek vases, Attic vase paintings in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, by L. D. Caskey and J. D. Beazley, long out of print and difficult to locate, is now available in its entirety on the Perseus web site, with an updated bibliography compiled by the MFA Department of Classical Art. Entries for the 175 vases catalogued by Caskey and Beazley can be accessed through a table of contents, or by using one of the following three reference schemes:
Original front matter from the Caskey and Beazley catalog appears at the start of each volume, accessible from the table of contents. Note that this online publication takes full advantage of interconnections in the Perseus library by allowing keyword and full-text searching using the Perseus lookup tool (e.g. "jumping" is a keyword for vases), and the English word and phrase search tool (e.g., a search for the word "inscription" in Caskey and Beazley). The Perseus Project thanks Nancy Allen, Mary Comstock, John Herrmann, and Janice Sorkow of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for making Web publication of these materials possible. The Caskey and Beazley catalog and illustrations for the Boston vases represent the first phase of collaborative work by the MFA Department of Classical Art and the Perseus Project. The second phase, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and currently in progress, will culminate in an online publication of Roman art, with descriptions, pictures, and other educational resources. The publication will catalog over 1000 artworks, including sculpture, coins, jewelry, glass, and pottery. We welcome your feedback and any comments on how you are making use of these resources. Please report any problems to the Perseus webmaster. |
