  1. Heise, Arne; Theorie optimaler Lohnraume: (in German) Wage policy and the structure of collective bargaining systems have been neglected in the political and economic discussions that centered around the European Monetary Union (EMU) to an amazing extent. Collective bargaining is one of the very few issues that have been explicitly excluded from the Maastricht treaty as subject of European regulation and only recently, wage policy under the conditions of a European Monetary Union has been considered at closer range. Yet, this has been done without putting the topic into a more general perspective. In this paper, I want to expose a 'theory of optimal wage areas', taking reference to Robert Mundell's seminal paper on 'optimum currency areas'. I want to pose the question whether the European Union can be regarded as an 'optimum wage area' and what will be the consequences for EMU. 2. Heise, Arne; Postkeynesianische Beschaftigungstheorie: (in German) In a most recent textbook on employment theory (Landmann/Jerger 1999), there is no mention of a distinct post Keynsian employment theory. This is the more surprising as the post Keynesian employment theory offers a truly macro-economic approach to the determination of the aggregate level of employment in an economy (with sets it apart from most neo-classical labour market theories) without lacking a comprehensive micro-economic foundation (as was the case with standard Keynesian employment theory). This paper intends to give a textbook-like survey of the principals of such a post Keynesian theory of employment and derives some principles for the impact of (nominal) wage policy on employment. 1. Susana Cristobal, Adam Zemla, Daniel Fischer, Leszek Rychlewski, Arne Elofsson; A study of quality measures for protein threading models: (in English) AbstractBackgroundPrediction of protein structures is one of the fundamental challenges in biology today. To fully understand how well different prediction methods perform, it is necessary to use measures that evaluate their performance. Every two years, starting in 1994, the CASP (Critical Assessment of protein Structure Prediction) process has been organized to evaluate the ability of different predictors to blindly predict the structure of proteins. To capture different features of the models, several measures have been developed during the CASP processes. However, these measures have not been examined in detail before. In an attempt to develop fully automatic measures that can be used in CASP, as well as in other type of benchmarking experiments, we have compared twenty-one measures. These measures include the measures used in CASP3 and CASP2 as well as have measures introduced later. We have studied their ability to distinguish between the better and worse models submitted to CASP3 and the correlation between them.ResultsUsing a small set of 1340 models for 23 different targets we show that most methods correlate with each other. Most pairs of measures show a correlation coefficient of about 0.5. The correlation is slightly higher for measures of similar types. We found that a significant problem when developing automatic measures is how to deal with proteins of different length. Also the comparisons between different measures is complicated as many measures are dependent on the size of the target. We show that the manual assessment can be reproduced to about 70% using automatic measures. Alignment independent measures, detects slightly more of the models with the correct fold, while alignment dependent measures agree better when selecting the best models for each target. Finally we show that using automatic measures would, to a large extent, reproduce the assessors ranking of the predictors at CASP3.ConclusionsWe show that given a sufficient number of targets the manual and automatic measures would have given almost identical results at CASP3. If the intent is to reproduce the type of scoring done by the manual assessor in in CASP3, the best approach might be to use a combination of alignment independent and alignment dependent measures, as used in several recent studies. 1. Lemke, Arne-Jorn; Integration magnetresonanztomographischer und computertomographischer Daten mit isotropen Voxeln in die Protonenbestrahlungsplanung bei okularen Tumoren: (in German) The radiation therapy of uveal melanomas using proton therapy is a very precise therapy procedure, that makes high demands on the underlying imaging modalities. In general magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) have the potential to fulfill these criteria using suited surface coils and optimized imaging techniques, respectively. Purpose of the investigations was the preparation and evaluation of an imaging system, that allows diagnosis and differetial diagnosis of uveal melanomas including staging on the one hand. On the other hand it should be the base for high precision radiation therapy planning. The preparation of images with isotropic voxels, i.e. the edges of the voxels have identical size, is desirable with both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). Several examinations on large patient groups were performed for the differentiation of different tumor entities and compared with clinical and histopathological outcome. The precision of the MR-based tumor volumetry was evaluated with animal studies in vitro and patient eyes in vivo. The MR-imaging with isotropic voxels was evaluated using several surface coils and phantom examinations. Comparable examinations were performed regarding CT. Digital image fusion of CT and MRI data sets was used to evaluate the precision of both modalities and for planning of radiation therapy. Using optimized examination techniques both CT and especially MRI are suitable for a precise proton therapy planning of uveal melanoma. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.46)

  3. , Arne Grimstrup, ... ; Write Once, Move Anywhere: Toward Dynamic Interoperability of Mobile Agent Systems: Mobile agents are an increasingly popular paradigm, and in recent years there has been a proliferation of mobile-agent systems. These systems are, however, largely incompatible with each other. In particular, agents cannot migrate to a host that runs a different mobile-agent system. Prior approaches to interoperability have tried to force agents to use a common API, and so far none have succeeded. Our goal, summarized in the catch phrase Write Once, Move Anywhere,'' led to our efforts to develop mechanisms that support dynamic runtime interoperability of mobile-agent systems. This paper describes the Grid Mobile-Agent System, which allows agents to migrate to different mobile-agent systems. [Text] (1.33)

  2. Roboom, Arne; Untersuchungen zum Ionentransport an der Zellinie EL-4 in Stresssituationen und waehrend der Induktion von Apoptose: (in German) The increased release of protons by biochemical processes, by the Na( )/H( )-antiporter and by the H( )/lactate-symporter has an influence on the drop in the pH(int)-value. The increase of the Ca(int)(2 )-concentration takes place via Ca(2 )(ext)-ions. This increase probably is caused by the release of IP(3). The reduction of the Ca(2 )int)-concentration is achieved by the Na( )/Ca(2 )-antiporter. Ca(2 )-ion sensitive K( )-channels probably are involved in the leak of K( )-ions. Oxidative stress through H(2)O(2). The decrease of the Na( )-gradient across via the plasma membrane probably is responsible for the drop of the pH(int)-value. Another cause for this drop of pH(int)-value is the lack of ATP in the cell, wich has an influence on the H( )-ATPase and the Na( )/K( )-ATPase. The increase of the Ca(2 )(int)-concentration does not take place via the Na( )/Ca(2 )-antiporter. The depletion of intracellular Ca(2 )-stores probably opens Ca(2 )-channels in the plasma membrane which are dependent on Ca(2 )-ions. Induction of apoptosis through staurosporine. Na( )/H( )-antiporters, which are dependent on PKC are straightly affected by staurosporine. The lost of their efficiency is a cause for the drop of pH(int)-value. K( )/Cl(-)-cotransporters which are dependent on serine/threonine kinases, probably causes a decrease of the K( )(int)-concentration. The Na( )/Ca(2 )-antiporters are not involved in the increase of the Ca(2 )(int)-concentration. There was no release from intracellular stores. [Text] (0.53)

  1. Brataas, Arne, Zhang, C., Chao, K. A.; Light scattering from a periodically modulated two dimensional electron gas with partially filled Landau levels: We study light scattering from a periodically modulated two dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field. If a subband is partially filled, the imaginary part of the dielectric function as a function of frequency contains additional discontinuities to the case of completely filled subbands. The positions of the discontinuities may be determined from the partial filling factor and the height of the discontinuity can be directly related to the modulation potential. The light scattering cross section contains a new peak which is absent for integer filling., Comment: RevTex, 4 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev. 2. Brataas, Arne, Mal'hukov, A. G., Steinebach, Christoph, Gudmundsson, Vidar, Chao, K. A.; Spin-density and charge-density excitations in quantum wires: We study an interacting electron gas in a quantum wire within the Hartree-Fock random phase approximation. Vertex corrections to the electron spin polarizability due to the electronic exchange interaction are important giving rise to spin-density excitations (SDE) with large oscillator strength shifted to lower energies with respect to single-particle states. The energy of intersubband SDE oscillates with the number of subbands occupied and has a minimum when a subband energy is close to the chemical potential. Intrasubband SDE have a linear dispersion at small wave-vectors. The corresponding sound velocity is reduced with respect to the Fermi velocity due to exchange interaction within the occupied subbands and exchange screening caused by virtual transitions to upper subbands. For intersubband and intrasubband charge-density excitations (CDE) vertex corrections are of less importance. For only a single subband occupied the screening of CDE and SDE in the Tomonaga-Luttinger model due to virtual transitions to upper subband is studied, where the virtual transitions are treated within the Hartree-Fock approximation. The calculations are in good qualitative agreement with experiments., Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures, RevTex. To appear in Phys. Rev. B [Text] [View with Perseus links] (1.06)
