  1. ... ; Decreases in blood perfusion of the anterior cingulate gyri in Anorexia Nervosa Restricters assessed by SPECT image analysis: (in English) AbstractBackgroundIt is possible that psychopathological differences exist between the restricting and bulimic forms of anorexia nervosa. We investigated localized differences of brain blood flow of anorexia nervosa patients using SPECT image analysis with statistic parametric mapping (SPM) in an attempt to link brain blood flow patterns to neurophysiologic characteristics.MethodsThe subjects enrolled in this study included the following three groups: pure restrictor anorexics (AN-R), anorexic bulimics (AN-BP), and healthy volunteers (HV). All images were transformed into the standard anatomical space of the stereotactic brain atlas, then smoothed. After statistical analysis of each brain image, the relationships among images were evaluated.ResultsSPM analysis of the SPECT images revealed that the blood flow of frontal area mainly containing bilateral anterior cingulate gyri (ACC) was significantly decreased in the AN-R group compared to the AN-BP and HV groups.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that some localized functions ofthe ACCare possibly relevant to the psychopathological aspects of AN-R. 1. Miller, George; The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two: Some Limits on Our Capacity for Processing Information: First, the span of absolute judgment and the span of immediate memory impose severe limitations on the amount of information that we are able to receive, process, and remember. By organizing the stimulus input simultaneously into several dimensions and successively into a sequence or chunks, we manage to break (or at least stretch) this informational bottleneck. Second, the process of recoding is a very important one in human psychology and deserves much more explicit attention than it has received. In particular, the kind of linguistic recoding that people do seems to me to be the very lifeblood of the thought processes. Recoding procedures are a constant concern to clinicians, social psychologists, linguists, and anthropologists and yet, probably because recoding is less accessible to experimental manipulation than nonsense syllables or T mazes, the traditional experimental psychologist has contributed little or nothing to their analysis. Nevertheless, experimental techniques can be used, methods of recoding can be specified, behavioral indicants can be found. And I anticipate that we will find a very orderly set of relations describing what now seems an uncharted wilderness of individual differences. Third, the concepts and measures provided by the theory of information provide a quantitative way of getting at some of these questions. The theory provides us with a yardstick for calibrating our stimulus materials and for measuring the performance of our subjects. In the interests of communication I have suppressed the technical details of information measurement and have tried to express the ideas in more familiar terms; I hope this paraphrase will not lead you to think they are not useful in research. Informational concepts have already proved valuable in the study of discrimination and of language; they promise a great deal in the study of learning and memory; and it has even been proposed that they can be useful in the study of concept formation. A lot of questions that seemed fruitless twenty or thirty years ago may now be worth another look. In fact, I feel that my story here must stop just as it begins to get really interesting. And finally, what about the magical number seven? What about the seven wonders of the world, the seven seas, the seven deadly sins, the seven daughters of Atlas in the Pleiades, the seven ages of man, the seven levels of hell, the seven primary colors, the seven notes of the musical scale, and the seven days of the week? What about the seven-point rating scale, the seven categories for absolute judgment, the seven objects in the span of attention, and the seven digits in the span of immediate memory? For the present I propose to withhold judgment. Perhaps there is something deep and profound behind all these sevens, something just calling out for us to discover it. But I suspect that it is only a pernicious, Pythagorean coincidence. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.52)

Kersten, Mik A., Murphy, Gail C.; Atlas: A Case Study in Building a Web-Based Learning Environment Using Aspect-oriented Programming: The Advanced Teaching and Learning Academic Server (Atlas) is a software system that supports web-based learning. Students can register for courses, and can navigate through personalized views of course material. Atlas has been built according to Sun Microsystem's Java (TM) Servlet specification using Xerox PARC's aspect-oriented programming support called AspectJ (TM). Since aspect-oriented programming is still in its infancy, little experience with employing this paradigm is currently available. In this paper, we start filling this gap by describing the aspects we used in Atlas and by discussing the effect of aspects on our object-oriented development practices. We describe some rules and policies that we employed to achieve our goals of maintainability and modifiability, and introduce a straightforward notation to express the design of aspects. Although we faced some small hurdles along the way, this combination of technology helped us build a fast, well-structured system in a reasonable amount of time. [Text] (9.63)

  2. Noffz, K.-H., Zoz, R., Kugel, A., Klefenz, F., Maenner, R.; Results of On-Line Tests of the ENABLE Prototype, a 2nd Level Trigger Processor for the TRT of ATLAS/LHC: The Enable Machine is a systolic 2nd level trigger processor for the transition radiation detector (TRD) of ATLAS/LHC. The task of the processor is to find the best candidate for a lepton track in a high background of pions according to the EAST benchmark [2] in less than 10 5s. As described earlier [1, 2] the Enable Machine finds all reasonable tracks by histogramming the coincidence of the mask templates and the RoI for each track. A prototype has been developed and tested within the EAST/RD-11 collaboration at CERN. It operates at 50 MHz and finds up to 400 arbitrary tracks in less than 10 5s. It is assembled of an interface board and one or more histogrammer boards which makes the Enable Machine easily scalable. The histogrammer units are systolic arrays consisting of a matrix of 36 field- programmable gate arrays (Xilinx XC3190). Through this it is possible to optimize the trigger algorithm, to adapt it to a changed detector setup, and it allows even the implementation of completly new algorithms. For the beam tests in autumn 1993 at CERN the overall functionality within the detector environment could be shown. We were able to link successfully the Enable prototype to the detector raw data stream as well as to the data acquisition system. For the next beam period in 1994 we will focus on efficiency measurements and tests with maximal detector data rate. [Text] (1.62)

  3. Klefenz, F., Noffz, K.-H., Zoz, R., Maenner, R.; ENABLE - A Systolic 2nd Level Trigger Processor for Track Finding and e/p Discrimination for ATLAS/LHC: The Enable Machine is a systolic 2nd level trigger processor for the transition radiation detector (TRD) of ATLAS/LHC. It is developed within the EAST/RD-11 collaboration at CERN. The task of the processor is to find electron tracks and to reject pion tracks according to the EAST benchmark algorithm in less than 10 ms. Track are identified by template matching in a (f,z) region of interest (RoI) selected by a 1st level trigger. In the (f,z) plane tracks of constant curvature are straight lines. The relevant lines form mask templates. Track identification is done by histogramming the coincidences of the templates and the RoI data for each possible track. The Enable Machine is an array processor that handles tracks of the same slope in parallel, and tracks of different slope in a pipeline. It is composed of two units, the Enable histogrammer unit and the Enable z/f-board. The interface daughter board is equipped with a HIPPI-interface developed at JINR/Dubna, and Xilinx 'corner turning' data converter chips. Enable uses programmable gate arrays (XILINX) for histogramming and synchronous SRAMs for pattern storage. With a clock rate of 40 MHz the trigger decision time is 6.5 ms and the latency 7.0 ms. The Enable machine is scalable in the RoI size as well as in the number of tracks processed. It can be adapted to different recognition tasks and detector setups. The prototype of the Enable Machine has been tested in a beam time of the RD6 collaboration at CERN in October 1993. [Text] (1.58)

  1. Losch, Martin; Analyse hydrographischer Schnitte mit Satellitenaltimetrie: (in German) Dedicated satellite missions that will lead to high precision, high resolution geoid models are planned and/or in preparation. In this study, a particular method is presented that allows the use of sea surface height data, that is consistent with its error covariance. A first test of the model in a scenario with a small data set demonstrates some of the model acteristics. One has to handle the mathematical under-determination of the model by introducing sufficient prior information about the state of the ocean. This independent information could be taken from a hydrographic atlas. Twin experiments with a data set taken from a general circulation model of the FLAME group reveal the importance of improved geoid models for estimating the flow field along a hydrographic section. When the sea surface height data is weighted according to the error estimates of the future geoid models GRACE and GOCE integrated transports of volume and temperature can be determined with an accuracy that is improved over the case with no sea surface height data by 55%. With the error estimates of the currently available geoid model EGM96 the reduction of the estimated errors does not exceed 18%. The inverse model estimates integrated volume transports through the WOCE hydrographic section SR3, one of the choke point sections of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, of 145-166 Sv. These values agree with the ones found by other authors. The error estimates range from 13 Sv without to 11 Sv with sea surface height data. The sea surface height data is referenced to the EGM96 geoid model and weighted according to its error covariance. Sea surface height data and an estimate of the sea surface height by the model are found to deviate from each other by more than the error estimates. [Text] (0.36)

  1. Moore, John N.; The Early Cartography of Renfrewshire to 1864: With their detail of past geographical distributions, early maps can be valuable documents in assisting many fields of local study. Much of Scotland's distinctive cartography was channelled into the brief period between the publication of the Blaeu atlas in 1654 and the Ordnance Survey six- and twenty-five inch sheets which first appeared in the 1840s and 1850s. Despite a scarcity of maps, particularly prior to the mid-eighteenth century, Scotland has a uniquely rich cartographic history and the work of early map-makers has contributed to placing "Scotland among the best mapped countries in the world". Unfortunately, this archive of Scotland's past remains largely untapped and study of the maps themselves has been noticeably limited, particularly in the field of cartobibliography (or listing what exists), where few areas have been investigated in detail. This work attempts to fill the gap for Renfrewshire and its burghs of Paisley, Greenock and Port Glasgow. The selected maps are mostly topographical, illustrating the county either as a separate unit or as a major part of a larger area. Maps which cover the whole of Scotland are not discussed, thereby excluding the one-inch Ordnance Survey sheets. Also omitted are large scale plans of estates or significant portions of the county. As the intention is to be as comprehensive as possible, both printed and manuscript maps are listed. Relatively few thematic maps were published before the middle of the nineteenth century but those relating solely to the county are again discussed. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (1.42)

  1. Cao, Yu, Terebey, Susan, Prince, Thomas A., Beichman, Charles A.; The High Resolution IRAS Galaxy Atlas: An atlas of the Galactic plane (-4.7 deg < b < 4.7 deg) plus the molecular clouds in Orion, Rho Oph, and Taurus-Auriga has been produced at 60 and 100 micron from IRAS data. The Atlas consists of resolution-enhanced coadded images having 1 arcmin -- 2 arcmin resolution as well as coadded images at the native IRAS resolution. The IRAS Galaxy Atlas, together with the DRAO HI line / 21 cm continuum and FCRAO CO (1-0) line Galactic plane surveys, both with similar (approx. 1 arcmin) resolution, provide a powerful venue for studying the interstellar medium, star formation and large scale structure in our Galaxy. This paper documents the production and characteristics of the Atlas., Comment: To appear in Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. Replaced June 2, 1997. Text unchanged. Missing tables added. Wrong figure sequence corrected. The Atlas images can now be accessed on line at http://crystal.ipac.caltech.edu:8001/applications/IGA/ [Text] [View with Perseus links] (4.00)

  2. Kunszt, Z.; The physics potential of the LHC: This talk is a short overview of the physics potential of the LHC with emphasis on Higgs search and SUSY search. First I review why LHC with the ATLAS and CMS detectors is expected to give a decisive test of the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism of the Standard Model. Then I consider the Higgs sector of the Standard Model (SM). Finally the search for supersymmetry is discussed within the framework of various implementation of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM)., Comment: Talk given at the meeting Beyond The Standard Model V, Balholm, Norway April 29 -- May 4, 1997, 10 pages, 2 figures [Text] [View with Perseus links] (1.82)

  3. Nisati, Aleandro, Petrarca, Silvano, Salvini, Giorgio; On The Possible Detection Of Massive Stable Exotic Particles At The LHC: The possible detection of massive quasi-stable exotic particles at the high luminosity hadronic colliders is discussed. In the coming ten years the LHC, now under preparation, has the best opportunity to observe them at the TeV scale. The present design of the ATLAS detector, that has been almost irreversibly decided, may turn out to be flexible enough to allow the detection of this interesting class of exotic particles. The trigger acceptance, the track reconstruction and the particle identification are studied. The necessity of a good measurement of the ionization loss in the muon sector of the detectors is recommended., Comment: 12 Latex pages, 4 figures JPEG [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.79)
