  1. Farn, David; A place of illusion : a study of the works of Iris Murdoch in relation to certain aspects of her use of the platonic cave myth: ~; Iris Murdoch's philosophy is essentially neo-Platonic, but because of the peculiar path which criticism of her work has taken, the tenor and detail of that philosophy has become misrepresented. The thesis charts the history of Murdoch ciriticism to show the origins of that misrepresentation, reiterates Plato's original Cave-and -Sun myth of The Republic, and examines anew how Murdoch has customised the myth in order to say more about the Self. The essential qualities promoted by the myth, which I call dynamism, self-deception and democracy, are shown naturally to provide a structure and rationale of the thesis and are thus thrown into fresh relief. This groundwork is covered in a full introduction, and the following chapters address the qualities of the myth in detail, applying them directly to Murdoch's fiction and non-fiction. Chapter One develops the notion of dynamism in Murdoch's writing, as contrasted with the urge her characters have to see goodness in static terms, focussing on her comic play with the Platonic pilgrimage and its corruption into A Romantic Quest, and on the way in which, like TS Eliot, she sees artistic and moral mediocrity as linked. Chapter Two explores Murdoch's picturing of the Fire in the Cave as a way of representing the self as a deceiver and appropriator of Freudian mythology, especially with reference to her articulate male narrators. Chapter Three discusses the democratic distribution of goodness within the Cave, in the light of the tendency Murdoch's characters (and critics) have of seeing goodness in elitist terms, detecting a new kind of tolerance for life as lived by the Fire, and challenging the way some feminist critics have misrepresented the myth. Chapter Four charts Murdoch's recent shifts of interest within the Cave, and the emergence of a new category of character. Chapter Five discusses Murdoch's developing optimism about the role of the Platonic pilgrim, and considers the impact of this optimism on the status of the novels as artefacts. Chapter Six concludes with an examination of some of the unresolved paradoxes of Murdoch's approach to fiction writing, in the context of her early ambitions and of what contemporary writers are achieving in the same field. 1. Ross Lazarus, Ken Kleinman, Inna Dashevsky, Alfred DeMaria, Richard Platt; Using automated medical records for rapid identification of illness syndromes (syndromic surveillance): the example of lower respiratory infection: (in English) AbstractBackgroundGaps in disease surveillance capacity, particularly for emerging infections and bioterrorist attack, highlight a need for efficient, real time identification of diseases.MethodsWe studied automated records from 1996 through 1999 of approximately 250,000 health plan members in greater Boston.ResultsWe identified 152,435 lower respiratory infection illness visits, comprising 106,670 episodes during 1,143,208 person-years. Three diagnoses, cough (ICD9CM 786.2), pneumonia not otherwise specified (ICD9CM 486) and acute bronchitis (ICD9CM 466.0) accounted for 91% of these visits, with expected age and sex distributions. Variation of weekly occurrences corresponded closely to national pneumonia and influenza mortality data. There was substantial variation in geographic location of the cases.ConclusionThis information complements existing surveillance programs by assessing the large majority of episodes of illness for which no etiologic agents are identified. Additional advantages include: a) sensitivity, uniformity and efficiency, since detection of events does not depend on clinicians' to actively report diagnoses, b) timeliness, the data are available within a day of the clinical event; and c) ease of integration into automated surveillance systems. These features facilitate early detection of conditions of public health importance, including regularly occurring events like seasonal respiratory illness, as well as unusual occurrences, such as a bioterrorist attack that first manifests as respiratory symptoms. These methods should also be applicable to other infectious and non-infectious conditions. Knowledge of disease patterns in real time may also help clinicians to manage patients, and assist health plan administrators in allocating resources efficiently. 2. ... ; A cohort study of possible risk factors for over-reporting of antihypertensive adherence: (in English) AbstractBackgroundThe identification of poor medicinal adherence is difficult because direct observation of medication use is usually impractical. Up to 50% of individuals on chronic therapies may not be taking their medication as prescribed. This study is one of the first to explore possible risk factors for over-reporting of antihypertensive adherence using electronic medication monitoring.MethodsThe adherence of 286 individuals on single-drug antihypertensive therapy in a large managed care organization was electronically monitored for approximately three months. Questionnaires on socioeconomic background, adherence to therapy, health beliefs, and social support before and after adherence monitoring were completed. Over-reporting of antihypertensive adherence was assessed by comparing the self-reported frequency of noncompliance with that determined from electronic dosing records. Risk factors for over-reporting were identified by contingency table analysis and step-wise logistic regression.ResultsAlthough only 21% of participants acknowledged missing doses on one or more days per week, electronic monitoring documented nonadherence at this or a higher level in 42% of participants. The following variables were associated with over-reporting: >1 versus 1 daily dose (OR = 2.58; 95% CI = 1.50-4.41; p = .0006), lower perceived health risk from nonadherence (OR = 1.35; 95% CI = 1.10-1.64; p = .0035), and annual household income of <$15,000 versus >$30,000 (OR = 2.64; 95% CI = 1.13-6.18; p = .025).ConclusionsOver-reporting of adherence may be affected by factors related to dosing frequency, health beliefs and socioeconomic status. This topic deserves further investigation in other patient populations to elucidate possible underlying behavioral explanations. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.76)

---------- NIL [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.83)

---------- Take a graded nilmanifold with a Riemannian (resp. Sub-Riemannian) metric. Lift the metric on its universal cover, one gets a distance which in turn yields balls. On these balls one can look at the Laplacian (resp. a Sub-Laplacian). If one focuses on the spectrum for the Dirichlet problem one can describe the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalues when the radius of the balls goes to infinity, using the tools of homogenisation. This also allows us to give a lower bound on the asymptotic volume of balls in terms of the volume of the Albanese Torus. In the particular case of Tori we also study the Neumann problem and we characterise the flat metrics looking at the asymptotic of the first eigenvalue for the Dirichlet case. We also investigate the situation in the Heisenberg groups. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.59)

  1. Platt, John C., Barr, Alan H.; Constrained Differential Optimization for Neural Networks: Many optimization models of neural networks need constraints to restrict the space of outputs to subspace which satisfies external criteria. Optimizations using energy methods yield "forces" which act upon the state of the neural network. The penalty method, in which quadratic energy constraints are added to an existing optimization energy, has become popular recently, but is not guaranteed to satisfy the constraint conditions when there are other forces on the neural model or when there are multiple constraints. In this paper, we present the basic differential multiplier method (BDMM), which satisfies constraints exactly; we create forces which gradually apply the constraints over time, using "neurons" that estimate Lagrange multipliers. The basic differential multiplier method is a system of differential equations first proposed by [ARROW] as an economic model. These differential equations locally converge to a constrained minimum. Examples of applications of the differential method of multipliers include enforcing permutation codewords in the analog decoding problem and enforcing valid tours in the traveling salesman problem. 2. Platt, John; Constrained methods for Neural Networks and Computer Graphics: Both computer graphics and neural networks are related, in that they model natural phenomena. Physically-based models are used by computer graphics researchers to create realistic, natural animation, and neural models are used by neural network researchers to create new algorithms or new circuits. To exploit successfully these graphical and neural models, engineers want models that fulfill designer-specified goals. These goals are converted into mathematical constraints. This thesis presents constraint methods for computer graphics and neural networks. The mathematical constraint methods modify the differential equations that govern the neural or physically-based models. The constraints methods gradually enforce the constraints exactly. This thesis also describes applications of constrained models to real problems. The first half of this thesis discusses constrained neural networks. The desired models and goals are often converted into constrained optimization problems. These optimization problems are solved using first-orderdifferential equations. There are a series of constraint methods which are applicable to optimization using differential equations: the Penalty Method adds extra terms to the optimization function which penalize violations of constraints, the Differential Multiplier Method adds subsidiary differential equations which estimate Lagrange multipliers to fulfill the constraints gradually and exactly, Rate-Controlled Constraints compute extra terms for the differential equation that force the system to fulfill the constraints exponentially. The applications of constrained neural networks include the creation of constrained circuits, error-correcting codes, symmetric edge detection for computer vision, and heuristics for the traveling salesman problem. The second half of this thesis discusses constrained computer graphics models. In computer graphics, the desired models and goals become constrained mechanical systems, which are typically simulated with second-order differential equations. The Penalty Method adds springs to the mechanical system to penalize violations of the constraints. Rate-Controlled Constraints add forces and impulses to the mechanical system to fulfill the constraints with critically damped motion. Constrained computer graphics models can be used to make deformable physically-based models follow the directives of a animator. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.68)

  1. Heikkila, Tanya; Linking Policy Changes and Resource Management Decisions: A Game Theoretic Analysis of Coordinated Water Management in Colorado: (in English) "This paper uses game theory to explain the evolution of rules governing ground and surface water in the South Platte River Basin in Colorado. Issues addressed in the analysis include 1) the role of existing institutions in creating credible commitments among actors to follow certain policy change strategies, 2) an examination of other 'off-the path' choices available to actors, 3) the effects of two level games such that efforts at the local level shaped statewide decisions, and 4) the effects of the rule changes on availability of information about ground and surface water in the watershed. From this analysis, the author will consider how water management institutions in Colorado's South Platte support or contradict watershed management theories." 2. Morgan, Betty; The Language of 'The Commons' in Low Income Housing Communities: Common Property Theory and the Development of a Progressive U.S. Federal Housing Policy: (in English) (From the Author's Abstract) While historically, public housing facilities in the United States have never been planned or managed from the perspectives of common property theory, one contemporary approach to the provision of public housing is to plan or manage public housing installations as 'communities of the whole.' (Pollack, 1997) This paper will examine one recent effort to apply the theoretical concepts of New Urbanism to the reinvention of a public housing facility located in the Southern United States, looking at the effort as a means for expanding housing options while creating a new sense of community. What emerges from this process, the paper argues, is the need for and applicability of common property theories and concepts to facilitate the conceptual understandings of those affected by the transition. Building upon the work of 1997 IASCP paper authors Bernard Freidan, Rutherford Platt, and Patricia Pollack (Is There an Urban Commons in the United States Panel), this report extends their efforts by developing a case study of the 1997 effort of the Greensboro, North Carolina, Public Housing Authority to transform one public housing community, Morningside Homes, and reports the results of an innovative design charette experience which combined unprecedented levels of community participation with cutting edge technical expertise in an effort to reinvent the public housing community concept. Among the numerous theoretical and conceptual needs which emerged from this innovative planning process, was the almost immediate recognition that public housing conversion, at this scale, will require attending to many of the same problems that have historically been solved through common property regimes.... This paper reports on the extraordinary process of planning, design, resolution and invigoration which transformed the Morningside community and describes the residents' process of establishing their own common property regime. Finally, nearing the project's first anniversary, the paper explores the success the project has achieved in pressing federal agencies, local governments, nonprofit and community organizations and developers to create innovative ways of redistributing rights and responsibilities for common spaces, land, infrastructure, and buildings, in this attempt to make the transition to new forms of public and private activities." 1. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (4.06)

  1. Platen, Matthias; Physiologie und Management der Beziehungen zwischen Fruchtbarkeit und Milchproduktion bei Hochleistungskuhen: (in German) Firstly, the investigation of the physiology of the relations between milk performance and fertility includes experiments with single animals at the beginning of the first and second ovarian activity p.p., measured by progesteron in milk, investigations of metabilic parametres, such as glucosis, urea, proteine, cholesterol, triglycerides, phosphorus and activity of the enzymes GLDH and GOT in blood plasma as well as these cows' characteristics in milk performance and fertility. The tests were carried out with German and Isreli cows with 305-day-milk yield of 7500 resp. 10200 litres per cow. On average, the ovarian activity starts on the 20th day (1st ovulation) and on the 35th day (2nd ovulation), independently from milk yield. Metabolic processes occur on a similar level, despite big differences in performance. Several of the investigated parametres show - in special relations to other characeteristics - reversions in the pre-sign of the correlations. One can conclude that there is adaptation of the ways of metabolism to specific conditions. An accumulation of cows without ovulation up to the 50th day is not nessesarily related to performance. An exact prognosis of following fertility is possible by considering the ovarian activity up to the 30th day. Secondly, the relations between milk performance and fertility marks in eight German herds (n=3225 cows, for seperate lactations) all Israeli Kibbuz herds (n=207 herds) and within a North American herd (n=320 cows). The variability of the empty days is determined only by 3% by the variability of milk performance. A longer service interval causes rising success of insemination. There is an optimum for the service interval in order to ladle out the potential of milk capacity. It is congruent with the financial optimum if the empty days are fixed independently from performance. A calving interval of more than one year is useful for high-yielding dairy cows. Thus, higher persisence and 201-305-day milk yield can be expected than. Physiological advantages were established for cows with high protein-to-fat-relation. Thirdly, the consideration of the entire reproduction process is cosed by investigation of the effect of age of first calving on performance and dystokia. An early calving age of 24 to 26 mounth is recommended. The result of the physiological analyses as well as economic calculations on the optimal empty days is the development of an animal-inidividual and herd-specific fertility-management-system. This REPROSYS-MRG-FERTILITY-ORGANIZER COW is applicated and analysed by experiments with 81 cows. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.53)

  1. Corey, David Dwyer; The Greek Sophists: Teachers of Virtue: (in English) This dissertation is a study of the Greek sophists as teachers of arete (virtue or human excellence) and a study of the conflict between sophistic and Socratic political values as portrayed in the dialogues of Plato. The first section offers a new definition of the term sophist based on ancient sources and attempts to present as clear a picture as is historically possible of the sophists activities. The second section examines and evaluates Platos criticisms of the sophists drawing attention especially to the dependence of certain criticisms upon a questionable set of epistemological assumptions about the role of knowledge in ethical action. And the final section describes in detail what the sophists understood arete to entail and how they went about teaching it. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.98)

Dutch), d.h. niederlandisch i.e.S. und flamisch (in Belgien). For more than ninety years Quickborn has been -and still is- an influential periodical for people interested in Low German language, literature and/or movement. Quickborn also has been a participant and an object of cultural and political discourse during the "3rd Reich". Persons in the "Low German Movement" very often considered their language ("Niederdeutsch) as a bridge to other Germanic languages (and their speakers!), especially to Dutch, meaning Flemish (in Belgium) and Netherlandish. And undoubtedly, there have been some similar thoughts in Belgium and the Netherlands. - The first part of this publication (by Volker Georg) analyses the extent and quality of such (partial) parallels as reflected in Quickborn. - The relationship between Low German and High German during the "3rd Reich" is a complicated one, too. Many speakers of Low German (nowadays mostly called "Platt") regard it as a language distinctly different from High German. Unfortunately, "High German" is an easily understandable metaphor, denoting "higher rank" etc. During the "3rd Reich" High German was generally called the "(German) mother-tongue": in a way this was the language of the "Fuhrer", the Nazis, of official and public usage. Adolf Hitler and most Nazis never spoke any Low German and did not (and could not) concede that Low German is a mothertongue in its own right. - The second part (by Dietmar Meyer) considers this relationship in analysing conceptual metaphors. 2. Knornschild, Ulrich; Untersuchungen zum laminar-turbulenten Transitionsprozess bei Anregung und Dampfung schraglaufender Tollmien-Schlichting-Wellen: TU Dresden, Maschinenwesen, Institut fur Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik; (in German) A sub-project of the working group III, "Transition Control" of the German Research Community's project "Transition", this paper is focused on experimental fundamental investigations in the field of laminar-turbulent transition. The experiments were carried out in the boundary layer of a flat plat with tangential blowing. The main topic is the development of instabilities, or so-called Tollmien-Schlichting Waves (TSWs), based on the oblique angle between the TSWs and the leading edge. In addition the influence of other parameters, including the sound-pressure level and the frequency of the TSWs are discussed. The instabilities are initialised by suction and blowing through flush, oblique slots in the surface of a flat plate. Pictures of the flow visualisation, recorded with a high-speed camera system, show the time-resolved development of structures (Lamda-Vortices) within the boundary layer. In order to analyse the experimental data, a comparison is made between it and numerical calculations corresponding to the Linear Instability Theory. Another main topic is the investigation of the active transition control. According to the Super Position Principle a second wave with opposite phase is superimposed on the TSW. It can be demonstrated that this technique works with oblique waves too. The initialised instabilities can almost completely be cancelled out. Investigations very close to the initialising slots of the TSW with a high special resolution show their influence on the development of the boundary layer., Als Teilprojekt des Themenkreises III "Transitionskontrolle" des Schwerpunkt-Forschungsprogramms "Transition" der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft, konzentriert sich diese Arbeit auf experimentelle Grundlagenuntersuchungen zum laminar-turbulenten Grenzsichtumschlag. After seventy years of pseudo-philosophical Marxism-Leninism, Russian philosophy has come back to life again in the open. Traditionally marked by the heritage of Byzantine religion and Greek philosophy (Plato), it was emancipated from religious thinking only at the end of the 19th century and is still interwoven with religion and literature. Nowadays Russian philosphers discuss problems such as history and ethics (Brodsky), non-binary truth value (Levin), the relation of landscape to the manner of thinking (Podoroga), and theory of consciousness (Mamardashwill and Pjatigorsky). Ryklin's terrorologics, Groy's ecophilosophy and Smirnov's psychohistory of culture are all reactions to Postmodernism, especially to Lacan and Derrida. [Text] (1.81)

  1. Porter, Jonathan R.; AN EXAMINATION OF THE VALIDITY OF STEADY STATE SHEAR STRENGTH DETERMINATION USING ISOTROPICALLY CONSOLIDATED UNDRAINED TRIAXIAL TESTS: George M. Filz, J. Michael Duncan, Thomas L. Brandon, James R. Martin II, O. Hayden Griffin Jr.; (in English) The assessment of the shear strength of soil deposits after the occurrence of large strains is an important issue for geotechnical engineers. One method for doing so, the steady state approach, is based on the assumption that the steady state undrained shear strength is a unique function of the in situ void ratio and effective stress. This method, which has been applied to liquefaction and flow failures, has been criticized because it may overestimate the in situ shear strength. The key to the steady state approach is accurate determination of the relationship between void ratio and effective stress at steady state. This is typically accomplished using conventional isotropically consolidated undrained (ICU) triaxial tests. The triaxial test was developed for measuring peak strengths, which typically occur at small strains, but steady state conditions typically occur at much larger strains. At large strain levels, the suitability of conventional triaxial testing procedures and error corrections is uncertain. The measured response at large strains may be inaccurate due to the influence of various testing errors. Furthermore, the true material response in the test specimen at large strains may not accurately represent in situ material behavior at large strains. This research effort consisted of an experimental and analytical study to examine the validity of steady state undrained shear strength determination using conventional ICU triaxial tests. The analytical study addressed triaxial testing errors and conventional corrections that are applied to test data and their influence on the measured steady state parameters. Finite element analyses were conducted to investigate the influence of variations in restraint at the end platens on stress distributions in the sample and measured stress-strain response. The finite element analyses incorporated axisymmetric interface elements to model the friction characteristics between the end platens and the specimen ends. The experimental study focused on several sands that are susceptible to liquefaction. An interface direct shear test program was conducted in order to evaluate various schemes for reducing end platen friction. ICU triaxial tests were conducted on each material using both conventional and lubricated end platens. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (1.44)

  2. Kochkin, Vladimir G.; Analysis and Testing of a Ready-to-Assemble Wood Framing System: Joseph R. Loferski, R. Terry Platt, Frank E. Woeste, James D. Dolan; (in English) The concept of a ready-to-assemble kit fabricated in a factory and delivered to the customer is well known and commonly used by the furniture industry. In wood construction, the lack of a simple and reliable method of assembling the frame members creates a barrier to wide acceptance of prefabricated kit structures. This thesis focuses on a novel technology of assembling structural components of a wood frame using a metal nail plate connector (NPC). This technology was referred to as a ready-to-assemble (RTA) wood framing system. The RTA system simplifies the framing process and allows for rapid erection of a wood structural frame by a small nonprofessional crew. A 16 x 24 foot RTA building was constructed to demonstrate the feasibility of the RTA system concept. An effective assembly sequence was proposed and successfully implemented. The design procedure for the RTA buildings was presented. The lateral load path for the RTA building includes diaphragms and shear walls. The contribution of the RTA frame can be ignored from the lateral load analysis. This conclusion was validated for the diaphragms with aspect ratios up to 4:1. The finite element method was used to model the RTA structures. The models incorporated semi-rigid behavior of the NPC. An analytical model was developed to predict the nonlinear moment-rotation relationship of the NPC. The proposed model showed a good agreement (R2=0.98) with the experimental data. Tests were conducted to measure the load-drift response of the RTA shear walls. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.92)

  3. Platt, Jason Owen; THE USE OF BUCKWHEAT BORDER HABITATS TO ATTRACT NATURAL ENEMIES OF CUCUMBER BEETLES IN A CUCURBIT AGROECOSYSTEM: L. T. Kok, Gegory E. Welbaum, John S. Caldwell; (in English) The potential control of cucumber beetles, Acalymma vittatum (Fab.) and Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi (Barber) (both Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) two major pests of cucurbits, was assessed in a cucurbit agroecosystem by using buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) border habitat to attract the natural enemies, Celatoria diabroticae (Shimer) and Celatoria setosa (Coquillett) (both Diptera: Tachinidae) and Chauliognathus pennsylvanicus (Deg.) (Coleoptera: Cantharidae). Five different plants were seeded in the border and buckwheat dominated. Four natural enemy groups were also included as indicators of the attractiveness of the floral border: The Order Diptera; the Families Tachinidae and Syrphidae of Diptera; and the Order Hymenoptera. In 1995-1996, rows of squash, Cucurbita pepo (L.) var. melopepo (Alef.) 'Seneca Prolific', and cucumbers, Cucumis sativa (L.) 'Arkansas Littleleaf', were planted perpendicular to floral border habitats. Sticky traps and modified Malaise traps on transects at intervals from the border were used to monitor insect numbers. Insect counts and yields of cucurbits were analyzed using analysis of variance with contrasts for linear and quadratic effects and regression model fitting. Borders were strongly attractive to Diptera and moderately attractive to C. pennsylvanicus, Syrphidae, Tachinidae, and Hymenoptera. C. setosa and C. diabroticae counts were too low to analyze and borders habitats did not have any meaningful effect on yields. The border conserved populations of Diptera, leatherwings, Hymenoptera, and tachinids on some dates and may be useful with economic thresholds for pest management because of an observed gradient of insect movement. 1. Platt, S. R., Kovac, J., Dragovan, M., Peterson, J. B., Ruhl, J. E.; Anisotropy in the Microwave Sky at 90 GHz: Results From Python III: The third year of observations with the Python microwave background experiment densely sample a $5.5^o\times 22^o$ region of sky that includes the fields measured during the first two years of observations with this instrument. The sky is sampled in two multipole bands centered at $l \approx 92$ and $l \approx 177$. These two data sets are analyzed to place limits on fluctuations in the microwave sky at 90 GHz. Interpreting the observed fluctuations as anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background we find flat band power estimates of $\delta T_l\equiv \sqrt{l(l+1)C_l/2\pi }% =54_{-12}^{+14}\mu K$ at $l=92_{-24}^{+37}$ and $\delta T_l=58_{-13}^{+15}\mu K$ at $l=177_{-58}^{+66}$. Combining the entire three year set of Python observations, we find that the angular power spectrum of fluctuations has a spectral index $m=.02_{-.16}^{+.18}$ and an amplitude $% \delta T_{l_e}=53_{-11}^{+13}\mu K$ at $l_e=145_{-74}^{+59}$ for the functional form $\delta T_l=\delta T_{l_e}(l/l_e)^m$. The stated uncertainties in the amplitudes and spectral index represent 1$\sigma $ confidence intervals in the likelihood added in quadrature with a 20\% calibration uncertainty and an estimate of the effects introduced due to imperfect overlap of the beams on the sky. The limits of $l$ are determined from the full width at half maximum of the window functions., Comment: 16 pages, postscript, 2 figures [Text] [View with Perseus links] (1.49)
