  1. Ailsa Small; Our Native Land: Donated by Mrs Annie Small , the artist's mother, from the exhibition "A mixture of Oil and Water". Born in 1931 at Challymenda, 40km East of Mullewa in the Mid West of Western Australia and learnt to paint from her father, who painted when not farming. A strong adherent to realism Small declined an offer of an overseas art school scholarship because she did not want to change her style. Our Native Land captures the landscape of Miss Small's property, Tallerang Peaks, in the upper Murchison region near Pindar, WA. Works by small are held in WA regional collections, state, national and private collections. She has had several solo and retrospective exhibitions, one of which was held at GRAG in 1991. 1. Goldstone, Robert, Steyvers, Mark, Spencer-Smith, Jesse, Kersten, Alan; Interactions Between Perceptual and Conceptual Learning: Confusions arise when 'stable' is equated with 'foundational.' Spurred on by the image of a houses foundation, it is tempting to think that something provides effective support to the extent that it is rigid and stable. We will argue that when considering the role of perception in grounding our concepts, exactly the opposite is true. Our perceptual system supports our ability to acquire new concepts by being flexibly tuned to these concepts. Whereas the concepts that we learn are certainly influenced by our perceptual representations, we will argue that these perceptual representations are also influenced by the learned concepts. In keeping with one of the central themes of this book, behavioral adaptability is completely consistent with representationalism. In fact, the most straightforward account of our experimental results is that concept learning can produce changes in perceptual representations, the 'vocabulary' of perceptual features, that are used by subsequent tasks. This chapter reviews theoretical and empirical evidence that perceptual vocabularies used to describe visual objects are flexibly adapted to the demands of their user. We will extend arguments made elsewhere for adaptive perceptual representations (Goldstone, Schyns, & Medin, 1998; Schyns, Goldstone, & Thibaut, 1998), and discuss research from our laboratory illustrating specific interactions between perceptual and conceptual learning. We will describe computer simulations that provide accounts of these interactions using neural network models. These models have detectors that become increasingly tuned to the set of perceptual features that support concept learning. The bulk of the chapter will be organized around mechanisms of human perceptual learning, and computer simulations of these mechanisms. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.56)

  1. Laor, Ari, Jannuzi, Buell T., Green, Richard F., Boroson, Todd A.; The UV Properties of the Narrow Line Quasar I Zwicky 1: I Zw 1 is the prototype narrow line quasar. We report here the results of our study of the UV emission of I Zw 1 using a high S/N (50-120) spectrum obtained with the HST FOS. The following main new results are obtained: 1. The Mg II and Al III doublets are partially/fully resolved. The measured doublet ratios verify theoretical predictions that the lines are thermalized in the BLR. 2. A weak associated UV absorption system is detected in N~V, and possibly also in C IV and Lya, suggesting an outflow with a velocity of 1870 km/s and velocity dispersion <300 km/s. 3. Lines from ions of increasing ionization level show increasing excess blue wing flux, and an increasing line peak velocity shift, reaching a maximum blueshift of about 2000 km/s for He II 1640. This may indicate an out-flowing component in the BLR, where the ionization level increases with velocity, and which is visible only in the approaching direction. The highest velocity part of this outflow may produce the associated UV absorption system. 4. The small C III] 1909 EW, and the small C III] 1909/Lya and C III] 1909/Si III] 1892 flux ratios indicate a typical BLR density of 10^11, i.e. about an order of magnitude larger than implied by C III] 1909 in most quasars. A BLR component of a higher density is implied by the EW and doublet ratio of the Al III 1857 doublet. 5. Prominent Fe II UV 191 emission is seen, together with weaker line emission at 1294 and 1871 A. These three features have been proposed as evidence for significant Lya pumping of the 8-10 eV levels of Fe II. 6. Significant Fe III emission is present. The Fe III UV 34 and UV 48 multiplets are clearly resolved, and Fe III UV 1, UV 47, UV 50, and UV 68 may also be present. (Shortened version), Comment: 28 pages, 1 table and 7 figures included. Uses aas2pp4.sty. Scheduled for the Astrophysical Journal November 10, 1997 issue, Vol. 489 [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.88)
