  1. Williams | Cicely Delphine | 1893-1992 | nutritionist and paediatrician; Williams, Cicely Delphine (1893-1992): The collection covers most aspects of Williams' life and career after 1939. Papers from her work with the British Colonial Service in Ghana, 1928-1936, were largely lost during transit to her next appointment in Singapore, but the typescript copy of her 1935 report The mortality and morbidity of the children of the Gold Coast is extant. Many papers relating to Williams' work with the British Colonial Service in Singapore, 1936-1941, were lost during the Japanese invasion, but she took a few files into Changi jail, where she wrote up the report An experiment in health work in Trengganu in 1940-1941. Notebooks, correspondence and writings made during her internment, when she was appointed as camp nutritionist by her fellow women prisoners, are also in the collection. Post-war papers cover most aspects of Williams' work, including positions with the World Health Organisation, the American University at Beirut and Tulane School of Public Health, as well as correspondence and collected reprints relating to work carried out in 'retirement' at Wyndham House, Oxford. 1. Sharp, Oliver J.; Pythia: A Parallel Compiler for Delirium: Pythia is an optimizing compiler for the coordination language Delirium, written in Delirium. It is part of the Madness project, which investigates both an alternative to the traditional dataflow implementation strategy. Delirium embeds imperatively defined operators within a functional context, giving the programmer control over the granularity of a computation. The application's control structure is expressed using powerful functional-language constructs like closures and function valued parameters. The bulk of actual computation however, is expressed in a convenient imperative language. Pythia performs traditional optimization strategies like macro-expansion, common expression elimination, and constant propagation. [Text] (8.04)

  3. Cascaval, Gheorghe Calin; Compile-time Performance Prediction of Scientific Programs: In this disertation we present a compile-time performance prediction environment for Fortran scientific programs. The performance data are expressed as symbolic expressions, with variables for program constructs, input data size and machine parameters. We focus on modeling the processor and its memory hierarchy. The results from the static estimation can be used to drive optimizations or can be displayed using performance visualization tools. The integration of our model within the Delphi system allows the user to do performance tuning and scalability analysis faster and easier than by using instrumentation. <P> The main contribution of this work is the cache behavior estimation using the stack distances algorithm. We have designed and implemented a compile-time algorithm that computes the stack histogram at compile-time. We use the stack histogram to predict program performance statically with very good accuracy. Experimental results are presented for two processor/memory architectures, the MIPS R10000 and UltraSparc IIi. The most interesting feature of the stack algorithm is that once the histogram is computed, the number of cache misses can be estimated for any cache size. <P> We use stack distances to quantify locality and we show that the average locality computed using stack distances is a very reliable metric. A new algorithm for stack processing, that is 30% faster than the best know algorithm on the suite of programs traced, is also presented. <P> [Text] (0.26)

  1. Reilly, Virginia J. Jr.; Essential Standards for Institutional Self-Evaluation of The Americans with Disabilities Act: ... ; (in English) ESSENTIAL STANDARDS FOR INSTITUTIONAL SELF-EVALUATION OF THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT by Virginia J. Reilly Committee Co-Chairs: Marilyn Lichtman and Jimmie Fortune Educational Research and Evaluation (Abstract) The purpose of this study was to identify standards related to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that are desirable for colleges conducting a self-study regarding program accessibility. A Delphi technique was used to determine standards and reach agreement among a panel of professionals concerning criteria to evaluate implementation of the ADA during a self-study or during an accreditation process. The panels standards were compared to information from a focus group of university students with disabilities. The panel of experts consisted of 30 professionals representing three areas: (a) agencies involved in the implementation and enforcement of the ADA, (b) postsecondary service providers recognized as leaders in their field by the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD), and (c) legal professionals specializing in the ADA. Students with various disabilities comprised a focus group to provide different voices of the stakeholders perspective. The panel generated standards from an open questionnaire in the first round of the Delphi. The results were compiled and organized into questionnaire form for phase II. The questionnaire was structured with a four point Likert-type scale allowing the panel to react positively or negatively to including each standard in the evaluation criteria. The scale consisted of: (4) critical, (3) valuable, (2) minimal, and (1) unnecessary. The panel was able to add or change standards in Phase II. In Phase III the standards were listed, and the mean from the ratings in Phase II were reported along with a reminder of the individuals rating in Phase II. The panel could change their ratings to agree with the mean, or they could provide their argument for keeping their original ranking if not matching the mean. The mean was recalculated after Phase III, and data from this round was used to establish the acceptable standards. All standards receiving a total of two-thirds of the responding panel members' votes in the critical and valuable categories were included in the proposed evaluation model. This information was then compared to information collected in the student focus group. The results of both the student focus group and the Delphi technique indicated a difference in perspectives of the stakeholders and experts. The research study revealed that the students were more concerned about services for high-schoolers prior to entering college. In contrast, the experts focused more on policy and administrative responsibilities. The Delphi panel and student focus group agreed on several issues important to program access. Both groups saw financial assistance, including support of assistive technology, as critical. They also agreed on the importance of training faculty, administrators and students about accommodations, as well as legal rights and responsibilities under the ADA. Students and panelists acknowledged a shared responsibility between the college and agencies such as the Department of Rehabilitative Services. However, the panelists did not agree with the students on the areas of outreach and collaboration. Although students valued strengthened transition services and training sessions in secondary schools, the Delphi panel did not mention these as areas for an ADA self-evaluation. It was recommended that the accepted standards be shared with AHEAD, the National Association of ADA Coordinators (NAADAC) and the Council for the Advancement of Standards for Student Services/Development Programs (CAS). AHEAD and NAADAC can use the standards as guidelines for self-evaluation and as a resource for training. It was also recommended that CAS and other accreditation agencies use the developed standards to add more guidance regarding accessibility to the accreditation and self-study process. 2. Dobbins, Thomas Roy; Clinical Experiences for Agricultural Teacher Education Programs in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.: ... ; (in English) Clinical Experiences for Agricultural Teacher Education Programs in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to build a task list for the clinical experience program, both early field and student teaching, for the agricultural teacher education programs in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The objectives were: (1) compile a list of clinical experiences, both early field and student teaching, that currently are provided in the clinical experiences for students of agricultural education in three-selected teacher education programs, and (2) use an expert panel to determine what should be included in early field experiences and student teaching experiences for students enrolled in the agricultural teacher education program. A modified Delphi technique was used to collect data via three questionnaires. Data were analyzed using mean scores and standard deviations of tasks rated on a five point Likert-type scale. Those tasks that the panelists rated with a standard deviation of less than or equal to one were considered to have met consensus. The population for this study consisted of agriculture teachers, secondary school administrators, agricultural education field staff, and agricultural education teacher educators from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Thirty-four Delphi panel members were purposively selected from the population. Thirty-one panel members responded to Round I, 33 panel members responded to Round II, and 29 responded to Round III yielding an overall response rate of 92%. This researcher asked the Delphi panel members to rate each task on a five-point Likert type scale, 1 = strongly disagree, 2 = disagree, 3 = not sure, 4 = agree, and 5 = strongly agree. The study used mean scores and standard deviations to analyze the results. Consensus was met if the standard deviation of a task was equal to or less than one. Rounds I, II, and III resulted in 102 tasks for early field and student teaching experiences that met consensus. Based on the findings, the researcher developed a task list for early field experiences and student teaching experiences to be considered for use by the agricultural education programs in the three cooperating states. The task list developed is a very comprehensive list that relates to every aspect of clinical experiences. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.85)

  3. Cabaniss, Katherine; Counseling and Computer Technology in the New Millennium--An Internet Delphi Study: Virginia Reilly, Sherry Lynch, Jimmie Fortune, Hildy Getz, David Hutchins; (in English) COUNSELING AND COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM-AN INTERNET DELPHI STUDY by Katherine Cabaniss Committee Co-Chairs: David Hutchins and Jimmie Fortune (ABSTRACT) Computer technology is developing so rapidly that the extent to which it is being utilized by counselors and counselor educators in their work is virtually unknown. The purpose of this study was to assess how much and in what ways counselor experts believe computer-related technology (CRT) is being utilized by professional counselors today. An additional purpose of this study was to determine projected use of CRT by the year 2008. Data were collected by means of a modified futures Delphi method in which a panel of 21 counselor experts comprised of one group of counselor educators, three groups of counselor practitioners, and one group of computer technologists completed three rounds of questions. The study, which was conducted entirely on the World Wide Web, requested Likert-type ratings of 53 generic work-related tasks in eight task categories for frequency of CRT use to accomplish the tasks and reasons for the selections. In addition, panelists rated ten specific CRT tools for frequency of use, and supplied written examples of current and future CRT use by counseling professionals. The findings of the study indicate counselors and counselor educators are using a large variety of CRT tools, including word processors, spread sheets, a variety of software programs, e-mail, chatrooms, listservs, databases, and other web-related tools to assist them in over half of job-related tasks today. Experts forecast CRT use by counselors will significantly increase by the year 2008, when professional counselors are expected to utilize CRT for at least 90% of their work-related tasks. It is suggested that findings of this study may provide an important foundation for much needed research investigating potential differences between therapeutic work accomplished with the help of CRT and traditional therapy, i.e., face-to-face therapy, in which computer technology is not utilized. Finally, results establish the need to implement and promote computer skills training and competency assessments in counselor education programs. [Text] [View with Perseus links] (0.68)

  1. Buergin, Roland; Dijet Production in Photon-Photon Collisions at sqrt(s)_ee=161 and 172 GeV: Dijet production is studied in collisions of quasi-real photons radiated by the LEP beams at e+e- centre-of-mass energies sqrt(s)_ee=161 and 172 GeV. Jets are reconstructed using a cone jet finding algorithm in the range |eta(jet)|<2 and E_T(jet)>3 GeV. The angular distributions of direct and double-resolved processes and the inclusive two-jet cross-section are measured. They are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and the prediction of the leading order Monte Carlo generators PYTHIA and PHOJET., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, uses sprocl.sty [Text] [View with Perseus links] (6.02)

  2. Rooke, A. M., collaboration, for the OPAL; Energy Flows and Jet Production in Tagged e-gamma Events at LEP: It has already been shown that the energy flow distributions in tagged events disagree with those predicted by QCD models, generating serious systematic errors in the unfolding of the photon structure function $F_{2}^{\gamma}$. This new analysis uses the jet structure in the hadronic final state to identify the class of events which is in worst agreement with the models. A cone jet finder is used to select events with 0,1 or 2 jets whose transverse energy is greater than 3 GeV. Tagged electrons are detected in the OPAL forward detector at angles between 60 and 120 milliradians. As well as the QCD-based Monte Carlo models, HERWIG and PYTHIA, the simple F2GEN program is used to give a comparison sample of events with purely pointlike photon-quark coupling., Comment: 1 pages including 1 figures [Text] [View with Perseus links] (3.26)
