    Pausanias, speaking of a certain temple at the ancient Bassae on Mount Cotylion, says of it, that after the temple at Tegea, it may be considered the most beautiful of 11 the temples of the Peloponnesus; it is of this building that we possess the frieze from the interior of the cella, in twenty-three slabs, each about two feet high; and the whole now known as the Phigalian marbles, so named from the town of Phigalia near which the temple stood.
