Decoration: Horseman. A youth on horseback gallops to the right carrying two spears. The youth rides lightly, his spears resting on his thigh. He is barefoot and wears a chlamys, and a large, rounded pack hangs on his back. His hair is short and thick and he has thick, starlike sideburns. The horse is rearing up slightly, only his back right hoof on the ground, while he looks back at the rider with one eye. Collection History: The vase originally was part of the collection of Baron Heyl. Dr. Valentin Mueller purchased it at the Heyl Sale. In 1930, the University Museum, Philadelphia, purchased it from Dr. Mueller. Condition: Some of the lekythos fragments are in excellent condition, while others are worn and faded; the black glaze on one large fragment toward the back of the vase is completely worn away.
