Vase Catalog Number: Mississippi 1977.3.90Images | Browse Images
Decoration: The mouth of the vase is lipped at the top and bottom, and reserved above. There is a fillet at the base, and the lower edge of the base is reserved. An egg-and-dart pattern is used around the rim and at the base of the handles. Above the scene is an upright palmette and lotus pattern, and below is a meander in threes with cross-squares. An armed youth is depicted pursuing a woman. The youth is dressed as a hunter, with a black-bordered chlamys over his left shoulder, a petasos hanging at his neck, and two spears in his left hand. He strides to the right and places his outstretched right hand on the shoulder of the fleeing woman. She wears a Doric peplos and a stephane in her hair. She looks back at the youth and raises her hands in a startled gesture. At the left of these two is another woman wearing similar clothes, with a sakkos in her hair. She runs to the left and looks back, gesturing to the youth with her left hand. With her right hand she lifts her peplos at the shoulder. This might possibly represent Theseus pursuing one of his loves (Helen?). Collection History: Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Frank S. Peddle, Jr. Formerly in D.M. Robinson collection, Harvard inv. 192. Purchased in Western Europe. Condition: Broken and mended, with slight restorations at the cracks. Sources Used: Mississippi museum archives
