Decoration:

Side A: Apollo and Artemis are alarmed at the abduction of their mother, Leto, by Tityos. Apollo, nude except a himation draped over his left arm, advancing profile to the right, reaches to Tityos. Tityos, bearded and nude, wearing a red wreath, standing profile to the right, lifts Leto, wearing a himation over a short-sleeved chiton, and a narrow stephane, shown profile to the right, with her head profile to the left. Artemis, advancing profile to the left, wearing a himation draped over her shoulders, a thin chiton with an overfold, a thin stephane and wreath in her hair, holds her right hand up (a gesture of horror?), and grasps her bow and arrow in her left hand.

Side B: A bearded trainer, wearing a himation draped over his left shoulder, holding a staff in his right hand, and his drapery in his left hand, directs a nude, youthful athlete standing in a nearly frontal stride, with his head profile to the left, holding a stick at a diagonal from the ground; another nude, bearded athlete (or trainer?), standing profile to the left, holds a stick at a diagonal in his left hand.

Inscriptions:

In red dipinti, on side A: CHAIRE, CHAIRE, APOLLON, CHAIRE, LETOUS (retrograde), AIDOS (next to Artemis).

On side B: SOSTRATOS KALOS, "Sostratos is beautiful"; SOTINOS, "Sotinos"; CHARES (retrograde), "Chares"; DEMOSTRATE, "Demostrate" (the last six letters in retrograde); CHAIRE, "hail,"SOSIAS, "Sosias" (retrograde).

Collection History: Ex Coll. Beugnot; acquired by the Louvre in 1866.
