The rhythm of the Greek hexameter depends on the time occupied in pronouncing successive syllables, and is quite independent of word accent. It resembles, therefore, modern music rather than English poetry. There is, indeed, a regular recurrence of metrically stressed syllables ยง 8), but rhymed syllables are rare and perhaps accidental.
